Elijah's Chairs

(kisse shel Eliyahu)

At Jewish circumcision ceremonies (the Brit Milah), a chair is set aside for the use of the prophet Elijah. Elijah is said to be a witness at all circumcisions when the “sign of the covenant” is placed upon the body of the child. During the ceremony, Elijah is specifically invited to be present and to witness that the covenant is still observed. A chair, usually highly carved and decorated, is set aside specifically for Elijah.

We offer a unique Elijah’s Chair, hand-carved with Jewish symbols. The chair is made in Bali from teak wood, which is famous for its beauty and durability. The chair also can be used as a seat of honor on the Bima, the raised platform from which services are conducted, for the special use of the Rabbi, Cantor, Synagogue officers, or people being honored because of its unique qualities and surpassing beauty.
